Known for his energetic leadership style and deep commitment to youth development, Lam-Adesina rose to prominence during the administration of Abiola Ajimobi. His appointment as Commissioner for Youth and Sports between August 2011 and September 2013 was not just another political appointment. It was a bold signal that young people could occupy strategic positions and deliver real results. For many observers in Oyo politics, it marked a turning point for youth inclusion in governance.

Born Into Politics, But Determined to Carve His Own Path

Lam-Adesina’s political story cannot be told without acknowledging the towering legacy of his father, Lam Adesina. Growing up in a politically conscious environment shaped his early understanding of leadership, governance, and public service. Yet, rather than relying solely on his father’s reputation, he built his own identity through activism, entrepreneurship, and grassroots engagement.

Long before he stepped into government, Lam-Adesina was already working with young people and community leaders across Oyo State. He co founded Future Initiative Nigeria, a platform dedicated to empowering young Nigerians and encouraging their participation in governance and civic leadership.

His professional journey also crossed into the private sector, including the oil and gas industry, where he served as a partner at Skipet Oil Nigeria Limited. The exposure helped him develop management and business experience that later influenced his leadership style in government. But his political roots actually started much earlier.

Back in 1998, he became the pioneer secretary of the youth wing of the Alliance for Democracy in Ibarapa East Local Government Area. That grassroots involvement sharpened his political instincts and built the network that would later support his rise.

One of the Youngest Commissioners in Oyo History

In 2011, Governor Ajimobi took a bold step by appointing Lam-Adesina as Commissioner for Youth and Sports.

The appointment immediately generated excitement among young people across the state. For many, it represented a new era where youthful voices could shape policy and influence development.

Lam-Adesina approached the role with a clear vision. His ministry launched a four point transformation agenda focused on youth empowerment, innovation and ICT development, sports infrastructure improvement, and the expansion of sporting activities across Oyo State.

Reviving Sports and Creating Opportunities for Youths

During his tenure, Lam-Adesina pushed several reforms and initiatives that revitalized the youth and sports ecosystem in the state.

One of the most visible achievements was the renovation of the Lekan Salami Stadium. The project included the installation of an artificial football pitch, improved seating facilities, and upgrades to the athletics track. The transformation helped restore the stadium as a major sporting hub in the region.

He also strengthened the operations of the legendary Shooting Stars Sports Club, one of Nigeria’s most historic football teams. Under his supervision, the club secured sponsorship deals and improved internally generated revenue, helping stabilize its finances and rebuild its competitive spirit.

Another major highlight was the revival of the Oyo State Governor’s Cup football competition. The tournament, which had been dormant for years, returned as a platform for discovering grassroots football talents across communities.

Empowering Youth Beyond Sports

Lam-Adesina’s focus was not limited to athletics. Recognizing the urgent need for youth employment, his ministry organized job and entrepreneurship fairs that connected hundreds of graduates with private sector employers.

He also introduced vocational training programmes designed to equip young people with practical skills such as fashion design, photography, barbing, and web design.

The goal was simple but powerful.

Equip young people with skills.

Create opportunities.

Turn potential into productivity.

A Political Brand Built on Youth Advocacy

Today, Lam-Adesina remains widely recognized as a strong voice for youth participation in politics and governance. His combination of political heritage, grassroots experience, and policy driven leadership has positioned him as one of the most influential young figures in Oyo State politics.

For many young Nigerians watching the political space, his journey sends a clear message.

Legacy can open doors.

But vision, competence, and service are what truly define leadership.

And in a nation where youth representation is becoming a central political conversation, the story of Dapo Lam-Adesina continues to resonate.

The question now is simple.

Is Nigeria ready for more leaders who rise through youth empowerment and service driven politics?
