Senator AbdulFatai Buhari, representing Oyo North Senatorial District, has expressed confidence in the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s chances in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 governorship and presidential elections, citing commitments he said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made to address key demands from the region.
Buhari, who spoke during an appearance on Arise TV on Monday night, said Oyo North would play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the state’s governorship election. He maintained that the APC had an advantage, while declining to disclose the party’s electoral strategy.
The senator disclosed that he had presented several development demands to Tinubu during a meeting in Abuja, including the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Igboho and a military formation in Oriire Local Government Area. He said the proposed medical facility would address healthcare needs in the region, while the military presence could help deter criminal activities following the kidnapping of children in the area.
Buhari said Tinubu had assured him that the requests would be addressed, adding that the President’s commitments, alongside the government’s performance and public image, would be crucial in the APC’s appeal to voters in 2027. He also argued that vote buying did not guarantee electoral support, insisting that voters could collect money without voting for the person who gave it to them.
On the Oyo governorship race and Governor Seyi Makinde’s candidacy, Buhari said the APC had its own strategy but would not reveal its plans publicly.
He also described the Senate controversy over the proposal to return former House leaders as “just a theatre,” arguing that the issue involved differing understandings of legislative rules.
